To all concerned, if you have been down to wintersett this last week you may have noticed the new gate on the half moon, this has been put in place by the anglers down there to try and deter the 4x4 brigade from making it inaccessable for us members. It is being kept locked whilst we get things in order and make it better for all, this is only tempory untill the club lock and keys arrive and the work to the haul road is carried out around the half moon. when up and running the keys will be made available to all at a small charge and will be annouced where to get them from at a later date, at the minute you can park up in front of the gates and still get in to fish. The rules are on the notice board and the water is ballifed at most times during the day, if you see anyone flytipping or abusing the place just try to get a reg number without breaking your neck and past it on to a regular down there that would be most appreciated. and litter please take it home its not fair for others to keep doing there bit only to find litter in a swim they previously cleaned. cheers.

HI, been for a walk round Wintersett today, not exactly a inspiration to fishing detected, Road to car parks are at best a mess, could not think it was possible for a normal car to go around to the dam end, looks like 4x4s have been playing round there, I was thinking of fishing it, but from what I've read and been told today, I'll no even bother with the main lake. Personally I think it's living on long past glory, now not even a mere shadow of what it once was, It was once a roach mecca, but the fact nobody seem to have caught any in 07 plus the poor conditioned pike, leads a person to the fact there are not many fish left other than the Pike, some carp & tench, spoke to two locals today, both said you'd be lucky to get even a bite these days, guy says the big black birds have eaten them all, he said he had seen birds gulping down big silver fish of 8oz to a 1lb in recent years, now not so many of the birds about, makes you wonder. They did say Botany was not bad and the other one Cold H still had a few fish. Looking round botany, the platforms look a total mess, dangerous even,, suppose guys fish the other side from where I was on the north bank I guess. Anyone any info to make a person want to fish Cold H these days ?, thats not for carp or pike, I don't do those lol I feel disappointed now after seeing the place, not like it was 25yrs ago, btw I actually helped build Anglers Lake there, I had to got there to drive a machine for a couple of days, lining the lake bed with a meter of clay ontop of some special sheeting on the bed of lake. I can see how challenging it is now, sure difficult to catch something thats not there anymore

dont be so quick to condemn the place,rs.things look a lot better when the flowers and leaves are out and the weather warms up.Wintersett has a lot to offer anglers who are prepared to put in a bit of hard work, theres some very nice fish to be had but its not easy to catch any small stuff. The cormarants have eaten a lot of the fish,i myself have seen more than 40 birds working their way across the lake, all coming to the surface with big roach. You only see the odd bird now and then(most days)and they dont catch much cos theres nowt left except the big fish which they cant swallow.I must admit that the place is now of more interest to the specimen angler but the botany can be a good mixed fishery and i often fish it and end up with some good mixed bags of tench, bream and roach, and i aint no Bob Nudd ,believe me!The platforms are ready for sorting out, problem is the water level is up and down depending on the weather and due to the leak in the dam.Come and have another look in the spring and bring a bin bag with you,we havent been kicking up all this fuss about nothing with the gates, theres more to wintersett than meets the eye!

Hi, good to hear mate, I always liked the look of the place, shame about the smaller fish, so whats the answer to that problem ? is there one or is the big lake just a specimen place for the future now. BTW, I know virtually ziltch about Cold H, know it's deep near the dam and thats where most fish, thats all I know.

big lake could do with some measures to create some sanctuary areas so the fish can get away from the cormorants,i think the EA can give advice on methods which employ bundles of plastic drainage pipes dropped into the lake to create artificial reefs. The lake is certainly big enough, with plenty of areas of 20 foot depth and deeper, and up to 500 metres across at points.Maybe someone else knows a bit more about it or could get advice from EA.Might be worth a few fresh bream as these are not as common as they were 10 years ago, although not many people try for them.As you say,it once had an awesome reputation for big bags of bream and many of the old locals can tell tales about 'two keepnets full o dustbin lids',they dont remember all the times when people caught naff all or just a couple of perch.Every now and then it can throw up a good catch,i once weighed 6 bream and 2 tench for a combined weight of 67 pounds,if the guy hadnt run out of bait he was well on his way to a irish style 'ton up'.He came back a few times to the same swim and never had a bite! That was 5 or 6 years ago but it shows the potential, it can fulfil your fishing dreams one day and break yer heart the next! thats fishing for you!

I have read on a few threads on this forum about restocking Wintersett.
I would advise caution on this matter, the fish that are present are well established stock, one stocking of fish could decimate the present stock, if a disease was to be introduced that the present stock were not immune to.
I witnessed spawnings of Carp and Tench last year and witnessed a large shoal of fingerling roach.
Time and money may be better spent on looking at Fish refuges to increase survival rates of the fry, this i feel would go a long way towards making the water self sustaining.

hi everyone. Don't know how many of you live around the Ryhill area, I live just a few villages away and mainly fish for pike on the fly and knew the lake as a young boy and its storys of pike. As a boy i fished anglers country park which is now lost to anglers. I know Winterset used to be a day ticket water and have fished it recently without knowing it had gone to leeds AA. Could anyone tell me if u can still get tickets for the day and where i can obtain one from? I must say the work that has been carried out makes it a lot more fishable to a fly angler. This is some of the best sport i have had around the area for pike. It has a good blend of conditions for the fly fishing method. In the one visit i had seven, one of which was a well marked 14 pound fish and nine fish escaped my grasp. I would love to obtain a day ticket and carry on with this place because I'm sure it could produce a fish of a life time.

please note that there is no wading allowed during close season,a rule which is designed to protect the eggs of fish which have recently spawned, including eggs of PIKE.There have been many instances of lure anglers bagging up recently and i believe this is due to the fish feeding up after spawning, perhaps they could benefit from being left alone for a few weeks. Its still ok to wade in order to land fish due to the shallow marginal depths at wintersett
