Imo if we got the car park sorted out at skip bridge (or when hopefully) we could work upstream and accsess the horseshoe bend that way. Nige mentioned this on a previous thread he looked at GE and I have also and it must be a better option with the access we have at the mo.
So lets go sort the mill top out for now and come up with a big plan for some serious nepalming of the vegetation at the bottom of the length in close season.
I'm sure we all have different thoughts about what needs prioritising but we'll have plenty of time to debate this in Aug inbetween taking the rise out of each other.
Keep on keeping on !
Mick.

Turned 50 myself this year Eddie, its more about physically been able to do the work than age. Nobody has a crystal ball to be able to know what we are capable of doing in 10years time and I'm with Rushie on the prospect of having to fish Moor munkton every week think I would rather go back golfing. There are stretches that are accessable, most of these are due to the livestock, but there's not many of these left and unused fisheries will be lost. Some are only interested in keeping match fishing venues open. Part of most peoples kit when fishing now in some form of spade, wether pleasure or match fishing this cannot be a good situation. Just remembered some additional information when coming off the mill Friday noticed a new set of metal gates have been erected, they are situated at the bottom end of the lane more or less at the end of the field above the weir, they were not the finished article, but when complete will certainly block the lane. yh I noticed them last time I was down hope I don't get lock in at some stage or anyone for that matter,

Does anyone have access to the following they can bring : STRIMMER - Theres a LOT of tall grass BARBED WIRE CUTTERS - and theres quite a bit of hidden Barbed Wire ready to tear your shins apart CHEST WADERS - Oh and by the way, you will have to wear them and get in the river to tell us where to put the pegs, so you must have an eye for a good swim Cheers Rushy

Dave, I have some wetsuits and boots, this isn't an offer to bring them on the work party I just thought you might want one for your next barbel session. If nobody has chest waders then I can bring you the wetsuit if required see if it fits. also have wire cutters

As you'll be aware from my previous posts I am well up for this and more importantly I will GET UP on time for this!! I would have posted earlier been been away in barbel-tastic Hereford for a long weekend.
If when the main working party is over, a couple of us could then borrow strimmers and strim a single path to horseshoe bend, I'll be up for that, 'cos then at least individuals will be able to clear one or two pegs there on subsequent days. To get from that overgrown stile to the bend, right way round it and part of the way up the straight is the same distance in strimming terms as was done in total on 16th May at railway Bottom, but we could be less ambitious than that and just aim for the bend.
At the moment those of us with no access to strimmers would have no hope of fishing Horseshoe bend, whereas at least some pegs near the Mill are currently fishable with a bit of beating down.
Incidentally most plants beaten down or strimmed on August 1st won't grow back much if at all this year, grasses being the main exception of course, but any path down to Horseshoe bend made then should remain navigable into the late summer and autumn if it is used a few times.

By the way does anybody know what's the situation on planning permission for restoring the former Skewkirk to Kirk Hammerton footbridge, about 150 yards below the Mill? There's a notice pinned to the fence at that spot about the planning application, but when I passed it I didn't have me glasses handy cos of all the straps on me holdall etc !!
From a bit of googling when I got home, I gather that the application has been back and forth to the planning authorities for years, and got knocked back last year cos they put the wrong colour line for the path or something on the plans they submitted. I think it's maybe the property owners on both sides of the river who've objected, and everyone else (Tockwith & Hammerton parish councils, etc) wants a former right of way restored. But I couldn't find out what the latest is, all I can find from 2015 is Tockwith parish council minutes from january 2015 in which
The reason I ask is that there is a footpath along most of the opposite bank (missing out some bends but going right round Horseshoe Bend), and I would at least be able to take a walk to Skip Bridge from Kirk Hammerton one day... even if I just did it on the wrong side of the river, not fishing!
The other relevant aspect of this to us is that there is clearly some kind of right of way issue going on which the landowners have been resisting against the parish council(s) for ages, so it's worth knowing that they - the parish council(s) would probably be "on our side" in terms of keeping the river accessible

Haha Nige there where trying to sort that one out 33 years ago when I started fishing, people sorting that one could be dead by now lol. There's something going on, down at the first real bend on the opposite bank, access has been made to the river and a platform built. Could be the proposed site I assume. And on the subject of swim building and accessing the weir pool. We may no longer be able to go down next to the old mill, but there's no reason why we can't fight our way back along the bank to it from a little further downstream, on the other side of the barbed wire fence. We might get away without someone having to wade to find swims, I know a lot of the pegs of old and I'm sure jb remembers them pretty well too. Looking forward to getting stuck in, it's a lovely length of the nidd! Eddie. Ps. Will bring a strimmer again and a few other bits and pieces.

Haha Eddie, been a long time but don't quote me on this. but years ago I`m sure you could walk from 1st field peg to the wall of the dam without walking down the old mill, but we won`t know unless we try I`m up for that 1.
think it needs a lot of fallen branches moving but we will have to be careful its very soft ground underneath.

I must admit I do occasionally and had 1 or 2 good barbel bits, only last year I had a hook pull and it bent my hook right round just wounded if anyone else fishes it.

Are there any York members in our working party?
Has the York stretch (which they call the 'Tockwith' stretch) on the other side of our mill stretch got any pegs cut? If so does that help with the wading situation? Or instead of/as well as wading, get a day ticket for York ?
their parking is about as close as ours.
(I know it's hard to tell when I'm being serious, but thinking outside the box can help at times)
