Hi all
Had a visit to Hammerton Mill yesterday to have a look at the venue and see how accessible the pegs were. They are all in good old fashioned Barbel Roving Tom Sawyer condition and it is evident one or two people have been down and fought their way to the river !!
One thing that has been a bug bear of mine for years now is the first 300 yards or so behind the wire fence. It is almost impossible to get down but on the odd occasion I've managed it there are some cracking looking swims.
I'm going to arrange a work party on 1st August with the intention of sorting some pegs out on the " Colditz Avenue "
It will entail a lot of scrambling , falling down banks and the odd graze here and there no doubt. The plan will be to get over the wire fence with the strimmers. Clear the top area so we can se what we are doing and then a couple of Bear Grylls types fighting their way down to the river. Once they are in the river they can wade along it and shout up where to make access. It will then be a case of machetes, bow saws loppers and spades to make paths down to the river.
I reckon we could get at least half a dozen cracking pegs in this stretch.
I will go firm on the date once I know when the lads that own strimmers can make it as that is the important bit of kit.
I reckon a morning with a team of ten or more should see some good progress.
Interested in giving us a hand and a morningof banter ............... please put your name down !!
All the best
Rushy

I too can do August but not July. Where's the barbed wire ? Just after the weir pool ? Last time I went the chap from the mill had blocked off access to the peg on the weir by tipping a load of garden rubbish on the path down. Hope the strimminators can do the Aug date 'cos I'd love to walk the first field again. Oh and I've got a new spade and a new machette. This fishing lark seems to be getting expensive for you Dave new pin required and a new phone most likely (they don't like water) and then the semi severed fingers.
Things can only get better.
Mick.

Go on then why not, just put your mobile in a plastic bag or something safe, before climbing down those overgrown banks towards the river!

Had a visit to hammerton mill myself yesterday with my dad, he's not been there in a while. I fished 1st peg after barbed wire he was one below looked good, but only caught bits. Had to dig the peg out prior to fishing really needed steps down as well as the balsam and nettles are slippy when you have trampled them down. The conversation soon got round to access to fisheries and that there are better pegs in horseshoe field than mill field and more of them. Question for you then the club now has access to the floodbank at Linton with a purpose built hardcore track, why can the club not approach the farmer that owns the land at horseshoe with a serious finacial offer to get access from the mill end to kissing gate, as there used to be? Guess where he matches are held? If your not aware of the condition of the fishery I would say its worse than last year when we were there, although it does look like there is a path across first field. Dad had a walk to bottom of field said you could barely see the stile over the fence let alone get over it. There is vertually no access into pegs where the barbed wire fence is and again the stiles are disappearing in the jungle. I WILL COME ON THE WORK PARTY, but again there needs to be a more permenant solution the reason I say this is purely looking at the likely average age of those that are putting the work in, mid 50's I reckon what is going to happen in 10 years time when this current group are not able to?

20 odd years ago the corner at the bottom of the field used to be completely clear like a bear bank and easy to get to the pegs sometimes you can`t even see the river.
we need to do a good job on this like railway top or it will be as bad again in 6 months, I do love this place and would love some more open pegs more anglers more bait going in bigger fish I hope.

I think we should make the whole length accessible, lets make a path along the flood bank along the length. It's more work for sure, but forum ac could keep the nidd fishable! I am happy to spend a couple of weekends to achieve this. Hopefully in the close season in future, but this year I am happy to put the work in now. The horseshoe bend is an iconic stretch, are we really ready to neglect it! I hope not. Ps just turned 50 so got a few years left in me yet, hopefully lol!

Turned 50 myself this year Eddie, its more about physically been able to do the work than age. Nobody has a crystal ball to be able to know what we are capable of doing in 10years time and I'm with Rushie on the prospect of having to fish Moor munkton every week think I would rather go back golfing. There are stretches that are accessable, most of these are due to the livestock, but there's not many of these left and unused fisheries will be lost. Some are only interested in keeping match fishing venues open. Part of most peoples kit when fishing now in some form of spade, wether pleasure or match fishing this cannot be a good situation. Just remembered some additional information when coming off the mill Friday noticed a new set of metal gates have been erected, they are situated at the bottom end of the lane more or less at the end of the field above the weir, they were not the finished article, but when complete will certainly block the lane.

Sounds a great idea but personally think we might be biting off more than we can chew trying to get all the way up to the horseshoe bend again !! My thinking is , if we can get another ten pegs in the Colditz Avenue at Mill top then the first field will have plenty of pegs to go at. We've got all the pegs we've opened up at Mill Bottom , we could maybe try and get some more pegs in above the outflow pipe and work our way up to the kissing gate and Horseshoe bend from this direction. Maybe get ourselves 4 or 5 strimmers and have a couple of good sessions next closed season. Jez . . Must admit that big security gate startled me as well but I noticed there is a pedestrian gate as part of it next to the hedge. Hopefully we will be able to get in and out of there and it won't be locked
