Hi
To clarify the situation this how I read the R. Nidd at Hammerton;
Starts at the cricket field above the weir, this is Hammerton Mill Top down towards Horseshoe Bend and Kissing Gate this is Hammerton Mill Bottom. Where the work party was working is Hammerton Railway Top and downstream of the work party is Hammerton Railway Bottom down to the railway bridge. From the railway bridge down to Skip Bridge is Skip Bridge Above and obviously from Skip Bridge down to Barnes Farm on right bank now is Skip Bridge Below.
Regards Graham
Well Bugga me , all these years and I've been fishing the wrong lengths Best get my Barbel diary and tippex out , all the fish I thought I'd caught at Hammerton Mill Top and I've never actually fished it Rushy I`ve had some nice Chub there years ago and last year I lost a really big barbel on flavoured meat, I think there`s only me that fishes it !!! all mine all mine yes its all mine

Had a ride up this morning and had a chat with the guy at the Mill. We are okay to take Brent's truck and a couple of cars down to the mill itself. Had a walk along the first field and a couple of cheeky casts but only a Chub pluck to show. I think my purple patch may have come to an end We've certainly got our work cut on this one lads . . The Balsam is six foot high !, There's about 14 of us though so with plenty of drinks, scythes, strimmers, spades and loppers we should have it done in no time At least we will gain access to the fast water where the Fish seem to be on the Wharfe at the moment.. Also walked the Mill Top length (thanks Graham ) and some nice looking pegs amongst the streamer weed might be worth a punt. West riding anglers have the length above with a big posh sign on the fence !, Team so far Rushy Brent Andy Mortia Paulyboy Andy Cabbo Patter dale Mick Eddie Johnboys AndyP Nige Rockybarbel Jeremy Ronnie Nige Smithleback

There's something going on, down at the first real bend on the opposite bank, access has been made to the river and a platform built. Could be the proposed site I assume. And on the subject of swim building and accessing the weir pool. We may no longer be able to go down next to the old mill, but there's no reason why we can't fight our way back along the bank to it from a little further downstream, on the other side of the barbed wire fence. We might get away without someone having to wade to find swims, I know a lot of the pegs of old and I'm sure jb remembers them pretty well too. Looking forward to getting stuck in, it's a lovely length of the nidd! Eddie. Ps. Will bring a strimmer again and a few other bits and pieces. Eddie When I was down last year had a chat with the owners of the Mill and they were saying they would be very grateful if we could not go down by the side of the mill to the weir peg. The access used to be through the gate and then go back on yourself but that is where the barbed wire is. I think it would be good PR if we re-established that access , hence me asking if anyone had any barbed wire cutters. Dave What exactly was his/her problem with us going down the side of the mill Dave?, we don't do any harm, I was down there a couple of times last season. I'm sick to death of snotty people having an objection to anglers going here, parking there, if we have right of access to the riverbank and we are leaving as we find then we are doing no harm, the only thing I ever leave on the bank is footprints...and the odd baiting needle/bankstick.

I think what's happened is the old mill, that was used as a base for a furniture stripping business, has become a residential property now and it seems fair enough that we don't traipse down to the weir pool past their kitchen window! It won't be too much of a trek to cut back from a bit further along the bank. We just need to get on top of the overgrown access issue and we will next Saturday.
Eddie.

It's not heavily used Eddie, they won't see many anglers down there, but I hear what your saying, it's like the guy at Helperby leaving notes on anglers cars, as far as I know it's a residential road, anyone with a Taxed car can park on there, he doesn't bother dog walkers parking up, only them nasty anglers. I'm on the River Wye for a week next week but I've always thought it's a massive waste not being able to get down the first 300/400 yards after the Weir, like any river, Weir's create great water quality for fish and it will be no different down there, bet there is some cracking fish holding area's.

I fished Hammerton yesterday down the horseshoe bend . I opened around 4 or 5 swims up before fishing. However when the rains came I opted not to move around so much and sit under the brolly! The barbel however were absent though I did catch 3 decent chub. Once you get over the stile and through that first bit the walk actually is not that bad. I hope to get up again there soon and get those elusive barbel that were always there. I would go to the working party but I work Saturdays unfortunately . I hope you have a good day lads.

A heroic effort Nick - did you have the impression you weren't the first to beat the path this season then? Cos it certainly hadn't been trodden at all when I was there a few weeks ago. Really looking forward to having a look on Saturday. and I'm pretty sure I'll end up fishing one or more of your pegs ... so thanks in advance!

Was thinking of having a go down there Saturday after the work party. Has the farmer harvested the crops? Would it be worth taking the strimmer with me to cut a peg or two? Anyone else thinking of doing the same?

Hmm. Nick said "4 or 5 pegs" and that's at least 4 of us already ... and if we're all pushing each other out of the way it can only be good for trampling down the jungle Be taking bookings for those pegs soon at this rate. Wonder when was the last time Horseshoe Bend was booked for a match?

I am beginning to wish I had kept quiet on this one! No barbel were caught ,its not been fishing that well the last couple of years!! The crops have not yet been harvested but once you turn the corner its bare and easy walking. There are a few pegs that could do with a trim but its around that stile where the main difficulties are. You need to be careful around there with barbed wire overgrowth ect. I am actually looking forward to fishing near the mill in the future as well. Its a fantastic length so much to go at. I just wish I had more time!
