Anyone had a look at charlyfarly2's latest couple of youtube videos featuring Kirk Hammerton. He visits the mill length where we have just had our work party, I think he is quite impressed with the work! Also looks like the path round the first field has just been cut too! He visits skip bridge too and works his way to where our earlier work party took place. That's looking a bit overgrown again. Where we cut a 4ft wide path through the balsam, it has closed to the narrowest of paths! I don't think Tom reads the forum these days, but what an effort he makes to walk the whole length!worth a watch. Eddie. youtu.be/8Q5mSFUvFlM

Fished hammerton again Friday arrived at half five walked down to farmhouse glide fought my way into peg above last week one look decided it was to shallow, so dropped into same peg again, river was low and clear. Started with maggot feeder and meat loads of little knocks, but no real bites, switched to float fishing brought plenty of small dace, chub and a perch 6oz back on feeder cast further downstream to find some depth resulted in a chub about 3lb. Had an attempt at getting into peg below to no avail. Walked back to mill about lunchtime fished 4th peg very shallow loads of debris in water on near bank, could see some fish moving in ant out of the willows ran the float through chub about 10oz first cast this spooked the other fish then nowt for a while. Went to the peg at fence end and prebaited with hemp & casters, returned to previous peg caught a few small dace after a hour packed stuff up and off to next peg. First cast with hair rigged prawn resulted in a perch about 1lb. Not long after Andy Mortia turns up looking to fish the peg, quick chat and off he goes downstream (how did you get on Andy?) Again getting loads off little knocks on all sorts of baits, but no decent bites until a switch to 4 casters gets another 1lb perch. Back on meat finally get a decent bite and the 3rd chub of the day is netted, packed up at 9pm walked back to car Andy's car was still there and a VW camper van with a stencil on one of the rear doors, Nige were you and clare at hammerton Friday? How did you get on? Were you in first field? There is at least 1 peg further downstream of where Tom was, its just above the narrowest part of the barley field. The paths have been mown recently, also if you are venturing down there be careful on the steps into the pegs due to the dry conditions they are crumbling underfoot.

Yes we had a short session on Friday, a lot shorter than we wanted so returned early Saturday though Mick and his mate beat us to it. I was there 7 am to 9.30 pm Saturday, so about 14 hours in 12 different pegs, and couldn't catch a barbel! Lost one in willow roots on the "rubble" peg near the wires, and that's all. Ah well, at least i'm feeding them up for you all, right round the length. At various points I turned to trotting maggot hoping for perch, but only managed countless roach & dace. Claire had perch, gudgeon, grayling and chublets as well. But she had her first ever barbel almost first cast (7.30 am), a little one less than 2 pound which didn't fight much, and her second last cast of the day (9 pm), a 4-pounder which gave her her first full-on fighting barbel. She fished at Carpvale from about 12.30-5 as well!! (she got quite attached to that place before June 16th and hasn't fished it since so she wanted to give it another go before the KHV kicks in** - she knows it's not proper fishing of course). Anyway, now she knows how a real wild fish can fight in a fast river. And by a nice coincidence, Claire's two barbel were out of two pegs I worked on ( a bit )at the work party. let's just say two of the fastest flowing spots. Anyway folks, a week on from the work party the pegs look BRILLIANT, and you should all be proud, but it's true that most of the crumbly steps we cut won't be lasting much longer. ** hopefully it won't.

That report makes me feel better Nige , only because myself and Terry also blanked on the barbel front although I did lose one in a unseen snag mid afternoon. Terry also lost two due to sloppy angling (don't repeat that to anyone) we both had good fun with some good perch and a few modest chub among the usual bits. A big well done to Claire for giving us a barbel lesson.
The place still looks great and hopefully the pegs will remain accessible for some time.
Mick.

By the way, Claire reckoned it's the best-looking and most peaceful stretch of river she's ever fished. Said the stretch above the weir, and then the weirpool, and then all the Mr. Crabtree swims downstream make it look like all the old fishing videos we've watched with John Wilson, etc.
I thought about this and had to agree with most of what she said. Videos of wild little rivers like the Wensum and Teme used to make me quite green with envy, always set somewhere perfect that I would never be able to go, and OK I've never fished them, but the Nidd seems to be up in their class.
Not sure about "peaceful" though - OK there's no speedboats but I wish the bees and the sheep and the sit-on lawnmowers would bloody shut up!!
(only joking, but yesterday I think they were the noisiest sheep I've ever fished near).

I fished it the other day and the first thing I noticed as the river had dropped and lost its colour was an 8 foot long , 8 inch diameter log laid right in front of the peg As it is a hit and hold peg anyway I decided to follow the plan through and cast out into the 4 foot diameter gap surrounded by willows , plonked the rod on my knee and sat there with the heartbeat rising 45 motionless minutes later I decide to reel in and revert to plan B ( The Swale ) but the other hidden snag where I had cast and had been sat in for 45 minutes , had other ideas. Two of us and a passing tractor eventually managed to snap my 15lb line and I lost the lot ................... ah well, enjoyed digging the peg out and it was worth it just to see you go a over t down the bank with the strimmer following you As Arnie says "I'll be back "

No Dave I was in the weir pool, I just love weirs even though they play havoc with the old lug holes. I also got a tongue lashing from the young nora batty character in the mill (she caught me looking at the path down the side of t'mill). After a morning struggling with assorted bits and a few decent perch (you warned me about the pesky stripies) my moment came. I turned my back for a private moment , looked back and the rods hooped over but motionless anyhow the barbel had now got me in the willow roots. A bit of tugging from different directions just before I was about to put the rod down to see if it would come out on it's own and bingo out it comes.
Game now on but this is no monster and in my head I'm already admiring the fish in the net. Alas that was not to be , it found a unseen snag just below the mid river willow , game now over. The pegs do look different now its back to low and clear and even though I spent some time prostrate in (our peg ) on the work party I couldn't recognise it. The place still has lots to offer and had the river been in better nick our end result would have been different.
Mick.

Jez I stuck it out until about 9.00 (down around the overhead wire area) trotting casters with some decent gear hoping to get through the smaller stuff & pick up something better - but not to be, just a few chulets, dace & hand size roach to show for my efforts. I had the last 40 minutes with some bigger baits but again nothing. If we keep putting bait in things might start to pick up & a bit of rain would help. Cheers Andy

Had another trip to the horseshoe bend today after watching that video (desperate apparently : )Anyway I got there just at the wrong time as the heavens opened so I ended up running the final furlong! Got the brolly up as quick as possible but was wet through with all the wet balsam flapping in the wind . Why am I doing this I must be mad im thinking. Anyway I eventually start fishing and after an hour the rod wrapped round and a 6 pound barbel in the net. Much happier now! Then the sun came out and if your in that place you will know your facing the sun so I decided to move to another swim. I fished a couple of the dug out swims on the mill side and caught 3 chub missed a few bites as well. I am very impressed with the new pegs great effort there. An enjoyable day in the end after a shocking start!

I'll make sure I get down there and feed them within the next week or so, too.

Well done getting down there again Nick, have the crops been cut yet? Its possible to get to horseshoe in about 20 mins. Then takes another 20 to get into a new peg.
