The crops are yet to be cut as of yesterday. I see there are a few pegs in that straight before the horseshoe that have been cleared . I remember having a bit of success in one of those many years ago now. I cannot believe the work that has been done I think I got to my peg in about half an hour however as I said before I was in a hurry. Spoilt for choice down there now from the mill now. I have fished the farmhouse glide before but if memory serves me right there was a famous peg further down near kissing gates I don't know never got that far down but near the end of the horseshoe I think. It might be worth a look later in the season .

Well when I said before that I'd try to get down there this week, I started to think about when, and by the time I'd got home, well this evening seemed as good a time as any, so true to my word I've just been and fed them tonight at Jez's glide and at what I assume to be Nick's most accessible peg (end of barley field, turn right up floodbank onto horseshoe, then turn left after 30 yards or so, about 250 yards above farm) as well.
2 hours on the glide i didn't have a sniff on meat or pellet, then cos I figured there were predators at work i ran a shad through and landed a jack pike to stop it being a blank. As i made my way out of Jez's peg i startled a deer that was on its way down for a drink.
then in Nick's peg I had a few eyesight issues as the light faded, fumbling around for a baiting needle that i'd dropped and then trying to get the baitstop in (my first time with drennan sink braid and I find it very difficult to get the loop not to gel together in a sticky mess when it's been through a sticky bait). Took me about half an hour to bait that first bloody hair - I would have just stuck a mono hooklength on with a ready tied push-stop if i'd known it would take that long!! All the more frustrating cos my first meat bait was in the water only 10 seconds when BANG something ripped it off the hair with a ferocious pluck.... then on subsequent casts, plenty more plucks and line bites that didn't develop, then 20 minutes later it had got dark way too quickly.... but that peg screams chub, chub, chub and more chub.
I'd hoped to fish by the mill on the way back but too late. Saw another deer quite near the mill on the way back too though.
Oh and the barley's still not harvested yet.
But like I say I've done my turn on the fish-feeding rota: meat, frankfurters, various kinds of pellets, side salad of hemp, etc.
Thanks for the access fellas!
By the way, judging by the parked vehicles at 5.40 pm, at least 4 of us fishing at Hammerton on a Tuesday - not bad at all - well done working party (and Tom for the promotional video)

Keep it at Nige your efforts will pay off one day down there. Your right about the chub there seems to be an increase in them on the stretch than recent seasons. I am thinking maggot feeder and maggots in a big way could stir things up a bit to get them competing! The fish are there so might be the way to go. No fancy hair rigs just sling that feeder every five minutes old school style. Problem is its costly but what price is a few wrap rounds worth? Its a tried and trusted method that might just pay off !

After failing miserably to bank a Barbel yet this season I took myself of to Kirk Hammerton for the first time in forty years ! Yes forty years. I fished the Sykes cup match for the first and last time and caught nowt, my son Stuart was born in September that year,he's40 next month. Putting my wellies on at the car park I was joined by Johnny (Ginger John I called him, hope he don't mind. Gulp )Guided by him we walked down the lane away from the river over the stile and into a recently cropped field. After an easy walk we found the recently cut end pegs, well done lads you've put in some proper graft there, was intending to join you the other week but was away with Err indoors and Granddaughter Blo#dy hot it was, bumped into Ronnie and dropped my tackle on the downstream end of the horseshoe bend sandbed to seek some shade and let my old bones recover from that walk. Didn't look very promising but what the hell, have a go here and maybe move later. Started with stickfloat and maggots, small Dace, Bleak and Chublets coming regularly then a bonus Perch around a pound and a half put in an appearance, nice. Set up the Barbel rod, my new Fox 13ft 1.5lb test curve float rod, Shimano bait runner loaded with 10lb BS SENSOR!!! and a size 8 Drennan wide gape hook- that's it, no weights, floats, nothing. Baited up with a piece of hot dog sausage ( it's denser and heavier than luncheon meat ) cast in and let it trundle down the river with the flow. No fish to that method so back on the stickfloat, a few more tiddlers followed so I put the rod down and went for a natter with John and two of his pals. Back at the peg I can't be bothered to move, only got an hour and a half of daylight left so I pinch on a small shot 3 ft from the hook and mold some plasticine around it, some more sausage on the hook and out it goes and I wait and wait and....... well you get the drift. 20.40pm not long left, think I'll try trundling meat again for the rest of the session so a 1inch cube of luncheon meat goes on the hook, the plasticine and shot come off. Cast in and fed the line out working the bait down the swim mending the line when necessary, down and down the swim it goes, how far ? 50-60 yards without snagging must be nearly down to the next person fishing, then a gentle pull on the rod, not a snatch, not a wrench just a pull as if the flow had sped up so I flipped the bail arm over and hit it. Hmm?? There's something on the end but it ain't pulling back, theres no bump, kick, nothing so I winch back what could quite easily be a lump of wood to within 20 yards and then said lump of wood springs into action, rod hoops over and the cluch starts to sing. Oh yes!! this ain't a Chub it's a Bertie. At last 5lb 14oz, not a monster but I've broke my duck at last. Still some light left, shall I try another cast ? Yes!! So in goes another lump of meat and down the river it goes 50-60-70 yards a long way then a couple of plucks so I gently tighten up and get another gentle pull in return so I hit it- no lump of wood this one it's off!! But I've got it under control and steadily pump it back and it surfaces 50 yards away. "Blo#dy hell" the lad in the next peg exclaims, " what was that"! My fish I said to myself and it soon graces the bottom of my net, 6lb 3oz. Yabadabadoo It's nearly dark now so time to pack up and go home. I walk back with the two lads who were fishing downstream and walk past all your hard work but can't see a thing, never mind it wont be long before I'm back again. Tight lines all. Keith (Happy bunny)

Nice one Keith! And on a new bit of kit too, like the idea of trundling meat through the swim.

Great fishing Keith & congrat's on the hard-earned catches. 5 - 14 is a very similar weight to the one I had down there that didn't fight till the net ...thought it was a small chub at first ... but that would have been 400 yards upstream
I've been trying the hot dog sausages too - I like the density and the smell, surely a LOT stronger than most spam (I would even pop a couple in a bun meself for a fisherman's lunch with a sachet of mustard, but I won't go anywhere near spam!!) I wonder if you'd have caught the same fish if you could have cut a one-inch square piece of hot dog!!
but I haven't trundled baits, cos it never occurred to me that anywhere down there could be that snag free. Thank goodness for big bends in the river that stop the flood debris coming round eh?
I do really like the idea of a bait that the fish sees moving naturally down the current. (I might even start to experiment with a bit of upstream rolling ledger too in certain pegs)
By the way I've also tried c*cktail sausages as a 'floater' for chub down there on a few slower spots & eddies. Not even seen one rise to a freebie yet. But I'll try again to turn them on to it.

Great write up Keith and it's great to hear of someone getting a couple of fish on the rolling meat method. I've read up on it and tried it myself a couple of times but have normally given up after a few casts due to lack of confidence. I've been casting upstream with a light arlesley bomb on and twitching it downstream rather than letting it roll downstream. Amazing how a good tale works , I think I will be trying it with a bit more confidence next time

I was there 7 am to 9.30 pm Saturday, so about 14 hours in 12 different pegs, and couldn't catch a barbel! Lost one in willow roots on the "rubble" peg near the wires, and that's all. Ah well, at least i'm feeding them up for you all, right round the length. a week later in the same peg, same time (2pm two Saturdays in a row), same bait, similar bite, similar run, but `this time I gave her nothing. The river was 2-3 foot up which meant even less space to play with, so I just held on for a new P-B of 8-5 Photo to follow (see other thread in PB section) (thanks Original Nige & Ronnie who made the peg).

God know s what those bloody fish will be thinking down at the mill stretch at the moment,
I don't think they have seen so many of us Anglers walking the banks let alone how much freebie food as been laid on a plate for them until they`ve been hooked,
but I must say as a former Angler of this stretch of my younger days it so nice that life as been brought back into this place, lets hope with more Anglers going down helps with the flattened down pegs and bigger fish with more bait going in.
I was surprised by how many people / Anglers love this place like I do and I like to thank all concerned who made the way for all to fish, it would of taken me a long time to bring a nice river back to its former glory
Thanks JB.

I fell in love with the Monkey Moorton stretch of the Nidd, the first bit I fished in winter, then I loved the work party stretch past the railway cos of my first ever barbel in June, but Hammerton is on another level. It's idyllic, and it's got just about everything..... except a pub of course But right now if you said you can have a Leeds book that excludes Hammerton, or you can only fish Hammerton all season long ... I'd buy the Hammerton only ticket!! Interesting how there were more cars there last Tuesday though than on Saturday.
