All the fishing within the centre boundries is free as long as you have access, you wouldnt need to be Sherlock to see where we are from the pics and i am not into secrets, today we were just below whitehall rd and we have caught from every peg, but it doesn't mean that thats where you have to go, just as many above the bridge near old railway bridge even more opp yorks post building and back of tgi fridays, the most fish are just below weir behind virgin gym on kirkie rd but they are hard to get at.

Daz, Though we have caught chub at Thwaites they are definatley not in the same numbers as other parts of the river, either above the city centre or downstream of the weir at Skelton Grange, I know you would think you would catch an odd one by accident in the middle of all those trout but its all down to predominant species etc the trout far outnumber the chub at Thwaites so to give yourself a better chance fish with bigger baits and try go round the trout, blue cheese, bread, waspgrub will give you a better chance though ive had the odd trout on these baits aswell at least your playing the percentage game. You have to remember when we go on other parts of the river we dont take a maggot or caster with us and sometimes you get more satisfaction from just getting one bite from a fish if its the species you targeted but doing it can lead to a few blanks on bits like Thwaites, at least fishing maggot, caster or worm gets your string pulled. I can put you on some pegs below Skelton Grange that i know are local for you that are solid with chub and never see an angler anymore but you need to be prepared to do a bit of Tom Sawyering. Steve

Best chub peg on the Aire and its South of the city, you can also drive your car behind your peg as long as you have a good sump guard. PS I once had a tench from this peg, and did a feature for anglers mail in 1981 a couple of pegs above it, had 30lb of bream, hybrids, and chub for the camera, its different now but just as good. frim - Hi Steve, think we met / had a brief chat when I came down to fish Polo last week and ended up on one side of a heavy bucket with you - had an hour on Lapwing with Daz after. I've spent quite some time now on Google Maps trying to find somewhere to park near TGI's and surrounding area but not found anything obvious. Thinking about having a couple of hours there tomorrow - to save me going boggle eyed - is there any local parking ? Cheers - Rushy

Rushy, The parking and access can be a real arse its one of the reasons we havn't taken the fishing rights through the centre, but to be honest its nice that something can be free. Just past TGI's there is a layby area do a bit of driving about and usually a place comes vacant, then walk through Staples car park to river side "you have then to get down the wall" if you fancy exploring try park near old volvo garage on welly bridge, walk along canal above lock, rivers on your right and all the pegs hold fish, alternatively park on canal road in museum/taxi carpark walk downstream on towpath with river on left anywhere near Skinners has loads of chub. The easiest parking is at Morrisons Kirkstall bridge, walk through rugby ground onto river go downstream using pennine way as far as you can, the river splits one way goes over gotts weir (wythers) the other way goes towards Kirky Rd 2nd peg down has a big tree in water and its full of chub. Theres plenty of fish at Kirkstall Abbey but it's hit and miss, the pegs below the abbey weir are solid but you have to be a local and do the silly handshake to get on. Steve

Daz If a chub had been there you would have had a peck, you are in the same peg that the large roach/ stroke hybrid was caught from on a match just last summer, the thread was aire spectacular have a look. Your right about the bream a couple of seasons ago in freezing conditions we located a huge shoal on a fish finder right infront of where you are fishing, its about 11ft deep down the middle and all the shoal were four foot off the bottom and not moving. You could have fished for days and not had a bite or liner and would never have known they were there. Steve
