Well , by all the great reports we've had from our Forum Barbel anglers new and old , it looks like we don't have many Virgin Barbellers out there any more I took Dranv8 and Bobble out for their inaugural Barbel fishing trip last week and as always Bobs brought along his array of video cameras and other kit . Travel, light we said . . . . It was like Status Quo on tour there was that much kit Anyway, we put together this little video to add to our Last Cast series Barbel Fishing The Basics Something to watch if the wife has got Corrie on and the option is to wash the pots youtu.be/gDOPQNcPhjA

Great stuff Rushy & the team. I fished some of those same pegs two days later.
Plenty there for me to think about and try out tactics and equipment-wise. Looks like I need to try out the bait dropper, PVA, etc as up to now I've tended to be a feeder and balled feed/loose feed man. I'm a lot more accurate with my throwing than with my casting, but then again I can't throw straight onto the bottom, can I?
And what was that hook length you mentioned? Some posh braided type I've never even heard of OK, but you mentioned 15 pounds b/s I think? So basically you don't use a lower b/s hooklength when barbel fishing? I've been fishing 12 mono mainline to 8 mono or 8 fluoro. It's just so ingrained in me to use a weaker hooklength.
[EDIT - Ok thanks Rushy I've now investigated the sink braid. I've got some old Drennan Dacron 10lb that I got in my "job lot" of tackle the other week, which is similar but is an inferior earlier version I think, so I can at least practice with that while waiting for yet another ebay purchase to arrive ]
What I've really got to do though is not to leave any important bits at home . Forgot my heavier leads and heavy feeders last weekend so couldn't keep my bait on the bottom close enough to the far bank willows in some pegs. I also meant to try PVA bags too for the first time, bought them online and then just left them at home. Doh.
And I dunno about using a cork -the baiting needle is something else that I need to hand round my neck I think. My finger is not even in the top three most painful places I've had a baiting needle stuck recently. That's if I can find it at all.
[EDIT - again I've just noticed, when I went to find that Dacron sinking braid, that my "job lot" of carp tackle has some good baiting needles that have caps on. Excellent news for the accident prone . Bright colours too - excellent news for the half-blind ]

Can't get the line twice through the eye of anything smaller than an 8 (anyone recommend a good 10 hook with a bigger eye than a Drennan Super specialist? I've also got some Mustad black nickel longpoint tens with a bigger eye ...but that's cos they're bigger at 10 than any size 8 I've ever seen). And I always have trouble getting small enough hair loops too (any tips anyone). Glad I had some old stuff to practise with cos I've wasted a helluva lot of line on my first ten or so attempts. Aye well I'm learning all the time.

I always carry a couple in my "bits" box, makes threading line through hook eyes, tubes etc so much easier Keith.

Hi Nige don't know about others but with the hair loop I used to be the same but in time you will get there I can do this now, just keep pushing the end loop back on its self until its small enough good look Nige. I tend to use size 12`s or 14`s hooks now, have you considered using hooklinks I sometimes get size 12`s to 14`s with 7/8 lb breaking strain but people tell its not strong enough. but its not always the line strength its the knot that makes it stronger, or the other way is to buy some strong hook length line with low diameter. years ago the main line went straight through to the hook, (meat, sweet corn or worm) used to just go straight on a size 8 hook none of this hook length or hair rig stuff lol haha showing my age now Nige. I`ve been trying the bait stoppers hooks where the stopper is already attached to the hair rig all you do is with a baiting needle is push the stopper through your bait job done and its reusable. I may not always be right but that's how you lean

Most of the chub I've ever caught and both of my Nidd barbel so far have been on 12's pre tied to 8 lb mono with a push-stop, just as you describe. 12lb mainline. But as Rushy says those Nidd willows are only ever a few feetor inches away... Good advice about the loops too - thanks.

Haha, Claire with a sewing box, not likely. But sounds like just what I need and I'll fire up ebay right now. Thanks Keith
